Walter Marks
Walter Marks was one of seven brave brothers who answered their nation’s call to serve in World War II. Assigned to the USS Ara (AK-136), a Liberty ship stationed in the South Pacific, Walter held the rank of Baker 2nd Class. The USS Ara, like other Liberty ships, played a critical role in the wartime logistics chain, transporting essential supplies and equipment across the Pacific and other theaters. Walter’s role aboard the USS Ara took him through intense operations during the Pacific Campaign, including the historic invasion of Guam and support missions in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, and the Marianas. Liberty ships like the Ara faced treacherous waters and challenging conditions, yet they were essential to the Allied victory. Walter’s dedication to duty was mirrored by his six brothers—Conrad, Charles, Henry, Alex, Ernest, and Leroy—who also served in the United States military during WWII. Together, the Marks brothers embodied a family commitment to courage, service, and sacrifice, contributing to the war effort across various branches and campaigns. Their collective service left a legacy of resilience and patriotism. For his contributions, Walter Marks was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. His service in the South Pacific remains a tribute to the crucial support roles that sustained the front lines and ultimately helped secure peace. Walter’s story is a lasting reminder of a family’s dedication to the ideals of freedom and the enduring bonds of service.
