Ernest Marks
Ernest "Ernie" Marks served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II as a Baker 1st Class aboard the USS Sheridan, an Ormsby-Class Attack Transport active in the Pacific Theater. Enlisting on September 21, 1942, Ernie was essential in ensuring his shipmates were sustained with nourishing meals throughout the intense combat conditions they faced. The USS Sheridan was notably involved in the Battle of Tarawa. Ernie's service contributed to the ship's distinguished participation, earning him the Bronze Star as part of the Sheridan's decorated crew. After the Battle of Tarawa, the USS Sheridan returned to Maui and later San Diego, where the crew continued training and provided essential support for upcoming operations. Ernie's dedication to his role on board was integral to maintaining morale and strength among his fellow sailors. Ernie came from a remarkable family with a strong tradition of service. One of eleven children, seven of his eight brothers also served in the military during World War II, contributing to the defense efforts across various branches. This legacy of service continued through Ernie's sons: Richard Marks, who joined the Navy, and Ken Marks, who served in the Air Force. Ernest Marks' story is one of commitment, honor, and a deep-rooted family dedication to serving their country. His service on the USS Sheridan and his contributions to the Pacific Theater are proud testaments to his family's legacy and to all who served.
