John Ruby

Master Sergeant John Ruby, a dedicated soldier and skilled craftsman, joined the California Army National Guard in 1938. Before his military service called him to action, he worked as a furniture maker and upholsterer, applying his hands-on skills with pride and precision. When World War II erupted, John was called into the regular Army and deployed to the Pacific Theater, where he served with distinction in three major campaigns: Bismarck Archipelago, Southern Philippines, and New Guinea.

The Ruby family embodied a deep commitment to service and sacrifice. John was one of seven brothers—all sons of Johannes Ruby—who determined to protect the freedoms their ancestors had once been denied. By the time Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, four of the seven brothers had already enlisted, setting a powerful example of dedication to country. Each brother served in various branches, from the California Army National Guard to the Military Police, with six of them deployed overseas at the same time. Together, they faced the hardships of war, their courage a lasting legacy for the freedoms they fought to protect.
