George Schneider
George Schneider was a United States Marine Corps Sergeant during World War II until 1946. During his service, he was stationed in the South Pacific, where he served aboard the USS Iowa, one of the Navy's most iconic battleships. Schneider was part of the crucial Pacific campaigns, contributing to the United States' strategic efforts in a challenging theater of war. Known for his dedication, bravery, and unwavering commitment to his fellow service members, Schneider returned home in 1946 with a legacy of service that his family and community continue to honor. Mr. Schneider's brother, Donald Schneider, also served in the military. Two significant highlights of the USS Iowa (BB-61) during World War II include: Transporting President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Tehran Conference (1943) as the USS Iowa famously transported President Roosevelt across the Atlantic in November 1943 to the Casablanca Conference, where he would eventually continue to Tehran for a critical meeting with Allied leaders Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. The USS Iowa was specially outfitted to accommodate the President, making it a unique part of diplomatic history. During Battle Engagements in the Pacific Theater (1944-1945), the USS Iowa played a crucial role in major battles, including the Marshall Islands Campaign and later the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944, one of history's most significant naval battles. With powerful 16-inch guns, Iowa provided crucial shore bombardment and anti-aircraft defense, supporting landings and protecting Allied forces from enemy attacks.
